What have been the main developments in the marketing of music in the past few decades?

I’m doing a paper on music marketing strategies and need a bit of help please! For example topics such as the loudness war etc.

    The change from records to cassettes to CD’s. They give the marketing department so many different types of approaches. From selling CD’s at a concert to paying for ads during the Super Bowl.

    A recent trend is for bands to market their own music at their website. They bypass the normal distribution network.
